About Fremantle Arts Centre

The limestone buildings of Fremantle Arts Centre were built by convicts in the 1860s as an asylum, and today hold galleries, studios and a café. On summer evenings the shaded garden and courtyard become an outdoor concert space, giving touring artists one of the prettiest settings in the metro area. The centre runs its own music programme as well as hosting promoters’ shows. In 2027 we track Sienna Spiro on 15 and 16 January and Leon Bridges on 3 March. The building became an arts centre in the 1970s and is heritage-listed, and the grounds make an unusually calm setting for a gig — trees, limestone walls and room to sit.

Fremantle Arts Centre: getting there and back

Fremantle Arts Centre is on Finnerty Street at the northern end of central Fremantle, roughly a 15-minute walk from Fremantle station along Queen Victoria Street or through the town centre. Trains from Perth reach Fremantle in about 30 minutes. Buses also stop close by on Queen Victoria Street. The centre has limited parking on site and nearby streets are time-restricted, so for a sold-out evening concert it is easier to take the train or a rideshare and enjoy a walk through Fremantle before the gates open.

Outdoor concerts here are usually picnic-style: bring a light rug if the event allows it, a hat for early entry, and a layer for after sunset, when the sea breeze off the Indian Ocean can make the garden cool.
